More and more sales of “free from” or for people with intolerances.
The development of health food markets has gained considerable importance in recent years. This emerging phenomenon of consumption allows customers of Italian supermarkets and hypermarkets to choose from almost 13,700 “free from” food products and over 10 thousand formulated to meet the needs of those who suffer from food allergies or intolerances (gluten, lactose etc). A rising and really wide offer for an increasingly consolidated business: in 2020, in fact, sales of “free from” foods have touched 7 billion euros and those of products for people suffering from intolerances have exceeded 4 billion euros, growing respectively by +3.3% and +4.6% compared to 2019. Monitoring the performance of this market was the Immagino Observatory by GS1 Italy, in collaboration with Nielsen, which examined the sales results of over 76 thousand products, equal to 82.6% of the turnover of supermarkets and hypermarkets in Italy.
…THOSE WITHOUT WHICH ARE WORTH MORE…
Among the free-from products analyzed, gluten-free and lactose-free products stand out, which always perform better. In fact, this is a sector whose offer is constantly expanding and in 2020 could count on 10,171 food products formulated to meet these precise nutritional needs. This set of products, equal to 13.4% of the food products detected by the Observatory, achieved more than 4 billion euros of sales in 2020, contributing 14.4% to the total sales of the food basket (excluding water and alcohol) bringing the figure to +4.6% compared to 2019.
The market for products for intolerant people is dominated by gluten-free products, both in terms of number of references and sell-outs (8,363 products that saw their sell-out increase by 5.0% over the 12 months surveyed). The other major branch of products for those with intolerances is that of ‘lactose-free’ products: these reached 2,141 references (2.8% of the total) and a 4.8% share of the total food sell-out.
